the tandem father with son. They competes in OS Zlín. OS Zlín is one of the largest regions in the Czech Republic with 150 breeders. (There are 34 regions in the Czech Republic.)
Beginning of breeding dates from 1964, but Michael started with racing after his graduation at the University in 1976. He has been racing together with his son Martin since 1993.
The basis of breeding was supplemented for the first time in 1993 by the pigeons of the double winner of the European Long Distance Cup Hillaire Verhellen (Catrysse). This import was excellent, so we repeated it in 1997 and 2002. These pigeons in the cross breed with a new pigeons are still the basis of the pigeons for long distances (over 700 km).
For short, middle and small long distances the loft was first time supplemented by pigeons Van Loon from Martin Wagner. But, in 2007 pigeons were bought from several excellent breeders from Belgium. These breeders are competing at the top level with a very small number of pigeons (Cyriel Verbeeck, Kenny Hollanders). In 2007 we also bought pigeons from Wilfried Mühlenstrodt – Gaby Vandenabeele line (grandchildren Bliksem) and from Fridrich Schön- Reynaert line (grandchildren Figo).Today we choose pigeons individually, especially from breeders from Germany and Belgium, which parents and grandparents are prominent breeding pigeons or top racers. (grandchildren Olympiade by Leo Heremans, Chipo by Benny Steveninck, Rudy by Vandenabeele, children and brother Frome by Renee Geukens, son of Junior 500 from Johan de Belser and others.)
We don´t have so many pigeons. Together up to 160pieces including breeding pigeons.
We race through the classic widowhood system. It means, we do not use hens for races, only males. Hens are only serve as passive widows in our pigeon loft. Racing team has 60pigeons together. (30 pieces two-years old and older pigeons plus 30 yearlings). We have a strict requirements for all racing pigeons. Also yearlings pigeons must be fully part of the racing team.
Only young pigeons for long races have different criteria. We approach to them individually and the importance here, in addition to the results, has the body structure, origin and intuition breeder.
Piet Van Alpen – THE NETHERLANDS
Piet van Alphen 57 years old, living in Dirksland on Goeree Overflakkee. The Netherlands. Piet has pigeons for almost 50 years. With the support of wife Petra, it is a pure hobby for him. He races in Afdeling 5 – Rayon West – Samenspel Zuid Hollandse Eilanden.
Piet starts the season with 18 cocks and some hens. The pigeons train 45 minutes once a day at the beginning of the season, later in the season the pigeons are trained twice a day. This often depends on how busy it is at work.
The cocks are raced on widowhood. Next year he is planning to spend more attention to the hens. For Piet it is important to keep the pigeons healthy. The droppings of the race birds are checked before the season and also during the season. A good climate in the loft is also of great importance. The pigeons must feel good in the loft.
The garden loft is south-facing and has been functioning well for many years. In the summer with high temperatures there will be extra ventilation.
After a few years of focusing on the renovation of the children’s home, iextra attention was paid to the pigeons in 2019. Through his pigeon friends Jan Roodzant from Dirksland and the father / son combination Molenaar from Herkingen the necessary quality impulse has come into the loft. This was especially with the pigeons from the lines of Gebr. Scheele / Koen Minderhoud and Combination Traas. All pigeons from Zeeland because those pigeons can also fly over the water.
At the beginning of the season there is lighter and less feeding. More is fed as the season progresses. This year Piet used the Pigeon Enduance Grain at Toppigeons. This was available to the pigeons in a jar and especially after the hard races this had to be refilled daily and the pigeons regained their weight very quickly. He will certainly use this again next year.
Piet tries to give as little as possible medication to the pigeons. Sometimes Sedochol once a week and if something comes out of the droppings checking, action is taken immediately.
The Niels is truly a special pigeon, he won the 1st national Argenton S2 and on 4 long distance races he takes 3 x 1st prize and 1x 2nd prize. His nest brother also won very good prizes, but not so early. Last year as a yearling, 2 young hens were bred from the Niels and these youngsters flew a 1st, 2nd and 9th prize in the club in the youngster races.
